Over the years I have chosen a word of the year. I always looked forward to it. Let me tell you why I’m ditching the word of the year in 2025.
Navigating each season has its share of teachable moments. Going into 2025 I don’t want to confine myself to the parameters of having one word. The thing about life is that there are highs and lows.
Depending on the season, I could rely on having one word of the year. But this upcoming season I feel that it will be a time of pruning. The type of pruning that only my faith journey will allow.
Time to Prune
Pruning could be my word of the year, but that would be like partially opening a gift. It’s about getting inside the box where the discovery begins. Initially, you toss the shiny bow and the pretty wrapping paper. Afterward, you decide what you will do with the gift. Will it replace something and if so, what must you let go of instead?
Immersing in that pruning experience will require me to embrace multiple words. Instead of focusing on one, I will welcome the words as they come to me. It will be like standing in the ocean and letting the incoming waves crash against your body.
Some waves can keep you upright, but others will knock you over. It’s when you get knocked over when you reach for a new word. A word that can feel like a lifeline. I am sure you can think of some words that you could embrace.
I imagine the upcoming new year will bring the words meant for us all. It is about being vulnerable enough to allow it to happen.
Maybe you will do your word of the year. Perhaps your word of the year is strong, resilient, ignite, brave, empowered, fearless, etc.
If you do, I hope it is everything that you want it to be. Maybe you are like me and would like the mystery of embracing the new year without limits. If so, then so be it.
Ditching the word of the year to learn
The seasons coming in the new year will each have a lesson to learn. May those lessons inspire you to embrace any words that can positively influence your life. Words that bring you joy, peace, inspiration, and a new outlook on everything you deserve.
Although I am ditching my word of the year, I feel good about it. Maybe I’ll take another spin on this idea in the future, but for now, I am ready to let go. What about you? The choice is yours and whatever you decide, only you will know if it worked.
Let’s look forward to new seasons of hope. Seasons that push us to be curious about what we can do and who we get to be.
